What are varicose veins?
Varicose veins are enlarged veins in the legs. They are often clearly visible to the naked eye in the form of thick and twisted ‘chords’ below the skin. Varicose veins may also appear as small red or blue lines, also referred to as thread veins or spider veins.
The swollen veins can cause all kinds of symptoms, including itching, achy or tired legs and swollen ankles. Most people find varicose veins particularly displeasing from a cosmetic point of view.

What treatment is there for varicose veins?
At De Clinique, these cosmetically unappealing veins can be ‘flushed’ using injections. The name for this treatment is sclerotherapy and is it performed by our specialist doctor, Dr. Kajal Surajbali.

The treatment involves a solution or foam being injected into the varicose vein, which causes the walls of the vein to seal. Over time, the varicose vein will then disappear.

What does the treatment involve?
The treatment is well tolerated and does not require the use of anaesthetic. You will be asked to wear an elastic compression stocking for 7 to 14 days following the procedure. The pressure from the stocking will help the walls of the vein remain sealed. Blood will no longer pass through the vein, causing the vein naturally to shrink. You body will subsequently dispose of the vein itself. Because there is a limit to the amount of solution that can be injected into a vein in one sitting, it may be necessary to undergo multiple treatment sessions.

Recovery period
You will be able to go home on the same day as your sclerotherapy. You may still be able to see or feel the varicose veins for a time following treatment. The injection of the solution may also cause brown pigmentation of the skin on the area treated. This will fade over a period, though can take some time to do so.
