man-armpit_vdbifuBotox® Oksel Dry is the ideal solution for men and women who suffer from excessive perspiration. The treatment involves a series of Botox injections to help normalise levels of perspiration. The results not only boost patients’ confidence, but also save significantly on clothing.

What is hyperhidrosis?
Perspiration is a natural and necessary process. It helps regulate body temperature. However, some people can perspire excessively, regardless of the temperature of the environment. These people suffer continuously from sticky palms, sweaty souls of the feet or armpits. This phenomenon is known as hyperhidrosis. Hyperhidrosis can have a huge impact on people’s quality of life. Sticky palms can hold people back in social circumstances, as well as cause a hindrance with certain activities.

People who suffer from excessive perspiration from the armpits often need to make a change of clothing numerous times a day; the visibly damp patches on their clothing cause them to feel self-conscious. It is estimated that 500,000 people in the Netherlands suffer from hyperhidrosis. Genetic factors often play a role, with a family history of the condition present in 30-50% of cases.

What is Botox® Oksel-Dry?
Botox® Oksel-Dry is a treatment that uses Botox to curb perspiration. The active substance in Botox is Botulinum Toxin, a substance that has been used medically since 1973 for neurological complaints. Botox blocks the signals from the nerves to the sweat glands, reducing perspiration. The effects last between six and twelve months, until you notice perspiration levels begin to rise again.

Who is this treatment suitable for?
Botox® Oksel-Dry is suitable for men and women who suffer from excessive perspiration from the armpits. The palms of the hands and the soles of the feet can also be treated. The treatment has a significant effect on limiting perspiration, but will not halt it entirely: perspiration is essential for the body’s health. Botox® Oksel-Dry is not suitable for pregnant or breast-feeding women.

The treatment
Botox is injected underneath the skin using a very fine needle. The practitioner will generally inject between ten and fifteen injections on each side. Most people do not find the injections painful. However, the practitioner can apply a numbing cream where necessary. In order to locate the precise points for injection, the practitioner may carry out a perspiration test. This involves applying iodine to the skin, followed by starch. The starch will turn a darker colour in those areas where perspiration is at its highest. These are then the sites where injections will be applied. In most cases, the test is not necessary and the practitioner will be able to identify the sites with the naked eye from the sweat beads that appear.

Effects
The Botox will begin to take effect after a couple of days. The effects will be at their peak after two weeks. The results of the treatment should be evaluated at this point. A follow-up consultation can be arranged with your practitioner to assess whether additional treatment is required. The effects of Botox® Oksel-Dry last between six to twelve months. Levels of perspiration will be significantly reduced during this period. You will notice that wet patches no longer appear on your clothes and will have no hesitation in extending a hand to anyone.

In order to retain the beneficial effects, the treatment can be repeated after 6-12 months. Treatments are often carried out in advance of the summer season – a single treatment will keep you feeling fresh for up to a year later.
